Brief History
The current masjid of ISCNY was built in 1981 in a residential area on the campus of Syracuse
University. At that time there were 500 or more Muslim students on the campus. The students
previously used a room on the campus for prayer. ISCNY grew out of a diverse group who
realized they needed a larger and permanent place of worship. Initially they prayed off campus
in a member’s home, which they outgrew quickly, and sights were set on a tract of land on the
campus. The architect’s rendering above shows a masjid that holds approximately 125
Worshipers and parking for 28 cars. The current masjid of ISCNY is shown below as it is today.
Further expansion of ISCNY took place with a major community investment in the Islamic
Community Center (ICC) of ISCNY, which is is situated on an expansive 60-acre plot of land,
with its primary building located at 5833 East Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville, NY, 13078. Serving
as a hub for a range of community services, the ICC hosts education programs, soccer, youth
camps, weekend schools, community dinners, workshops, member activities, and more.
Ongoing development on the property aims to cater to diverse needs within our community. This
includes the establishment of facilities such as a cemetery, janaza washing and preparation
area (maksala), and spaces for business developments. Our overarching vision is to create an
inclusive environment that caters to the diverse needs of the Muslim community in the Syracuse
area.
